Bachelor of Computer Science (Data Science) with Honours

Turn data into decisions.
Shape the future.

Every click, transaction, message, and sensor reading generates data. The world now produces more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of it every single day. The organisations that can make sense of it — faster, more accurately, and at scale — win. Malaysia’s big data analytics market is expanding by 73% and the MyDIGITAL blueprint has committed to developing 30,000 data professionals. This degree gives you the full toolkit — Python, R, machine learning, big data infrastructure, AI, data visualisation, and statistical analysis — built around real projects and an AI-native learning environment designed to make you immediately valuable from the moment you graduate.

In a world overflowing with data, insight becomes power.

Future Careers

High-demand skills. Limitless possibilities.

Data science is consistently ranked among the highest-paid and most in-demand fields for technology graduates in Malaysia. The MyDIGITAL blueprint has set a national target to develop 30,000 data professionals and demand continues to grow faster than the talent pipeline can fill it. Every sector is hiring — banking and financial services, healthcare, retail, logistics, government, telecommunications, and technology companies are all actively building data teams. The ability to extract meaning from data is no longer a specialised function — it is a core organisational capability, and the people who can build it are valued accordingly.

Why This Programme Matters

The Reality

  • Malaysia’s big data analytics market is growing from USD 1.1 billion to USD 1.9 billion — a 73% expansion — driven by digital transformation across every major industry
  • Malaysia’s hyperscale data centre market stands at USD 6 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 40 billion by 2031, creating enormous infrastructure demand for data-skilled graduates
  • BARC research shows big data adoption translates into an average 18% profit increase for organisations, making investment in data talent a strategic priority across all sectors
  • PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer reports 103% year-on-year growth in AI and data talent demand — the fastest-growing category in the technology job market

The Education

Data science is not one skill — it is a stack of interconnected competencies that must work together. This degree was built to develop all of them in sequence. Students do not study data science conceptually. They build systems, run analyses, and deliver insights using real datasets from the first year of the programme.

Programming and systems foundations build the technical base. Discrete mathematics, probability and statistics give graduates analytical depth. Core modules in machine learning and artificial intelligence give graduates both theoretical understanding and practical application skills. Big data architecture and data mining prepare graduates for real-world environments. Graphics and data visualisation connect technical skills to organisational impact.

The AI-Native Advantage

Artificial intelligence is not a final year topic in this programme — it is a Year 1 core module. Students begin building AI competency from their first semester and deepen it throughout the degree. By the time they graduate, AI is not a subject they studied — it is a tool they work with naturally.

You Will Master

  • Machine learning model development and deployment across real-world datasets
  • Natural language processing and unstructured data analysis using modern AI frameworks
  • Big data infrastructure design and management for AI-scale workloads
  • Data visualisation and business intelligence tools that communicate insight to decision-makers
  • Responsible AI design and the ethical dimensions of data-driven systems

The AI-Native Learning Experience

We do not treat AI as a secondary subject. The entire learning experience is structured around AI tools, AI reasoning, and immediate workforce readiness. From Year 1, students use AI-powered platforms to build models, analyse data, and develop the professional instincts of people who have always worked in an AI-enabled environment.

  • Embedded Fluency

AI tools and concepts are integrated into the curriculum from the first semester. Artificial intelligence is a Year 1 core module. Machine learning, data mining, and unstructured data analysis follow in subsequent years. You graduate with genuine AI fluency, not surface-level familiarity.

  • Active Data Labs

Purpose-built data science labs equipped with the tools and platforms used by working data professionals. Students work with real datasets across all three years, building a portfolio of genuine analytical work rather than exercises.

  • Personalised Learning Analytics

Adaptive AI systems continuously monitor progress, identify gaps, and adjust the learning pathway accordingly. You always know where you stand and what to focus on next.

  • Project-Led & Portfolio-Based Assessment

Assessment reflects how data employers actually evaluate candidates. Students build real systems, conduct real analyses, and present findings in formats that mirror professional data science practice.

  • Leadership & Professional Readiness

Communication, ethics, research thinking, and professional practice are embedded throughout all three years. Graduates leave analytically sharp, technically capable, and ready to operate in cross-functional business environments.

Industry Projects & Certifications

Real projects. Recognised certifications. Career advantage.

Students gain industry exposure throughout the programme — not only during final year. Through UNIMY’s network of technology and data analytics partners, students work on real challenges and projects drawn from organisations actively using data science to drive business outcomes across Malaysia and the region. UNIMY’s Tech Talk series has brought active industry leaders directly onto campus, and UNIMY’s collaboration with Squarecloud involves real deployment of an AI-driven platform for energy efficiency and smart building analytics — giving students the opportunity to engage with live machine learning and IoT systems on campus.

Career Outcomes

Our graduates are future-ready and in demand from the moment they complete this programme.

Malaysia’s data economy is growing at a pace that no other technology discipline can match right now. The combination of the MyDIGITAL blueprint, the country’s emergence as a major hyperscale data centre hub, accelerating AI adoption, and the structural shortage of qualified data professionals creates a career market that strongly favours graduates with real skills and real experience.

UNIMY graduates enter that market with both. Career opportunities span every sector of the Malaysian economy and beyond.

Financial services, healthcare, e-commerce, logistics, government digital services, telecommunications, consulting, and technology companies are all actively hiring data professionals at every level.
